How do I know which patio umbrella to choose?

We have a range of sizes, shapes and colours to choose from across our range of patio umbrellas.

To start, we recommend marking out the space you need to shade to help determine the size of canopy you require.

From there, utilise our 3D viewer to place the umbrella in your space to see how it looks ‘in situ’, then refer to our comparison chart above to make sure the sizes and design features are exactly what you are after.

If your space is more compact, we recommend looking at our ‘Jardin’ Garden and Patio Umbrella Collection, and our 1.9m Go Large Patio Umbrellas. If your space is larger, or more shade is required, we suggest the 2m and 2.8m diameter patio umbrellas. 

Umbrellas for in tables: 

• 2m diameter suits a 4-6 seat table. 

• 2.8m diameter suits a 6-8 seat table.

Umbrellas for by the pool:

• Jardin and 2m diameter: we suggest one lounge chair per umbrella.

• 2.8m diameter: fits two loung chairs per umbrella.

What are your patio umbrellas made from?

All of our patio umbrellas are engineer certified to withstand Gale force conditions. Featuring marine-grade hardware, anti-corrosion frames and high-grade canopies, our patio umbrellas are suitable for commercial and residential use. We use a range of canvas and high-performance fabrics, which are water-repellent, weatherproof, mould-resistant and highly durable.

Do patio umbrellas protect you from sunburn?

Our patio umbrella canopies are designed not just to look good but to meet strict criteria for sun protection.

All of the umbrellas and tents across our range of both beach and patio umbrellas are UPF50+ and offer 98% UV protection.

An umbrella does not provide 100% sun protection. We also recommend following the Cancer Council’s recommendations for comprehensive sun safety.

How much does a patio umbrella weigh?

The weight will vary depending on the style of Basil Bangs patio umbrella you choose. We recommend looking at our Umbrella Comparison Chart to determine the style that best suits your needs.

My patio umbrella will be used by the pool. What umbrella base do I need?

For freestanding patio umbrellas, we recommend a minimum weight of 25kg. 

A general rule of thumb is, the bigger the umbrella the heavier the base, and if the site is exposed to winds, we suggest extra weight again to add further ballast.

Does my patio umbrella need a stand?

Yes. We recommend using a heavy umbrella base for all of our patio umbrellas. 

A general rule of thumb is, the bigger the umbrella the heavier the base, and if the site is exposed to winds, we suggest extra weight again to add further ballast. No-one wants a flying umbrella!

If your patio umbrella is going in a table, the 14kg base should be fine.

For anything freestanding, we recommend a minimum weight of 25kg. 

For our Double Caspar, we recommend a minimum weight of 30kg.

How should I store my patio umbrella?

If you’ve used your umbrella, make sure it’s completely dry before sliding over a protective cover. While our canopies are both water-resistant and waterproof, we recommend allowing your umbrella to dry out before storing it to avoid any mould. Storing it in between uses will extend its life and minimise wear and tear, giving you the best quality shade for longer.

How do I clean my patio umbrella?

We recommend regular brushing of your canopy to remove any leaves, dirt and debris. In salty coastal environments, a monthly hose of the frame and canopy helps to remove build up of salt. 

For more intense cleaning, all of our patio umbrellas have removable canopies to allow for washing. Please refer to our Cleaning Guide for detailed instructions.

My umbrella frame is still good. Can I buy a new canopy?

Yes you can! You can purchase new canopies for all of our patio umbrellas. Contact us for a quote.

My umbrella is broken. Can it be repaired?

Yes! All of our patio umbrellas are repairable.

We stock replaceable parts for all of our patio umbrellas. Send us an email with photos of the issue you have and we’ll be happy to assess it and provide a repair quote.

At the end of their life, all of our aluminium frame umbrellas are fully recyclable…ready to give another product some life!
